چکیده

In this correspondence, we establish a partial ordering framework to compare flatfading channels in a capability sense, which is based on the relative dominance of their mutual information functions over a convex set of input distributions. For this purpose, we address the effect of the line-of-sight and scattering components on the mutual information of flat-fading channels. For example, we show that in the presence of channel state information (CSI) at the receiver, the mutual information of flat-fading channels is monotonically increasing with respect to the absolute value of the line-of-sight component of the channel. In other words, for a fixed scattering component, channels with larger line-of-sight component are more capable than channels with smaller line-of-sight component. In contrast, in the absence of CSI, the mutual information is monotonically increasing with respect to the line-of-sight component, provided that it is smaller than or equal to the standard deviation of the scattering component. Furthermore, we briefly address applications of this work to the capacity assessment of simple and compound channels. Index Terms Capability, capacity assessment, compound channels, flat-fading, mutual information, partial ordering, Rayleigh, Rician. ∗This work was supported in part by Texas Instruments Leadership University Program.

A Blind Hammerstein Diversity Combining Technique for Flat Fading Channels

Diversity combining techniques play an important role in combating the destructive effects of channel fading in wireless communication systems. In this work we present a blind diversity combining technique for Rayleigh flat fading channels based on Hammerstein type filters. We show that the performance of this technique is very close to ideal MRC system which is accepted as an optimum receiver ...

On Comparability of Multiple Antenna Channels

Partial ordering relations, first developed by Shannon and Csiszar for discrete memoryless channels, can be used for comparing certain information-theoretic properties of channels. In this paper we extend their ideas to multiple antenna channels and introduce three partial ordering relations that enable us to compare multiple antenna channels in different senses, namely, strong sense, weak sens...

Asymptotic analysis of the conventional decision feedback receiver in fading channels

Spectral efficiency presents the ultimate limit on data rate per unit bandwidth of a certain communication system. For direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems the spectral efficiency has been derived in case of synchronous reception for optimal and linear multiuser receivers, flat fading and non-fading environments as well as single and multi-cell cellular networks. The ...

Bit Error Performance for Asynchronous Ds Cdma Systems Over Multipath Rayleigh Fading Channels (RESEARCH NOTE)

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in the use of CDMA in mobile communications. Bit error rate is one of the most important parameters in the evaluation of CDMA systems. In this paper, we develop a technique to find an accurate approximation to the probability of bit error for asynchronous direct–sequence code division multiple–access (DS/CDMA) systems by modeling the multipl...

Asymptotic analysis of the conventional decision feedback receiver in flat fading channels

Spectral efficiency presents the ultimate limit on the data rate per unit bandwidth of a certain communication system. For the DS-CDMA systems spectral efficiency has been derived for optimal and linear multiuser receivers in case of synchronous reception, fading and non-fading environment as well as single and multi-cell cellular networks. The most pervasive model employed in all these analyse...
